Projection and other updates -- Nov. 25

As you can see along the right side, we've started to establish some of the complex bonuses. Click on a bonus, and it will tell you which games are needed to qualify for it. Click on a game, and it will tell you for which bonuses it is required.

Also, I've updated some bowl projections based on last weekend's results. Some of the more significant changes (be they significant to the world at large or to individuals who might be reading this site) include:

-I've switched Oklahoma and Texas, moving the Sooners into the FedEx BCS National Championship Game and Texas into the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. This is because I think Oklahoma will beat Oklahoma State and vault over the Longhorns into one of the top two spots in the BCS. Of course, results of actual games will determine these matchups, so this is just my effort to pick the remainder of the Big 12 and SEC schedules.

-Nevada and Florida Atlantic, both 5-6, are out of the projected bowl field for now, replaced (though not directly) with Arkansas and San Jose State. We have the Razorbacks playing Western Michigan in the Independence Bowl and we have SJ State playing Clemson in the Emerald Bowl (local tie-in there).

-Rob Biro's Northwestern Wildcats have been moved from the Valero Alamo Bowl to the Champs Sports Bowl. Currently, they project to face Miami there, though we're working on a way to change that projection to Georgia Tech, so as to have both of Rob's alma maters in the same bowl game.

-South Florida, having defeated UConn on Sunday night to guarantee bowl eligibility, is now slotted into the St. Petersburg Bowl, because they're right freaking there! UConn has been moved to an International Bowl matchup with Buffalo. All-time classic.

-We're now projecting Florida State and South Carolina in the Chick-fil A Bowl -- a Bobby Bowden/Steve Spurrier matchup for all those of you who remember their big intrastate rivalry games in the 90s. Also, the Chick-fil A Bowl is scheduled for a Sunday, which I think is hilarious. Can they serve the sandwiches at the game?

Once again, these are mere projections, and many are likely to be wrong. But as we establish and test the site, it gives us something with which to work.

Please check back periodically for updates. There are many more bonuses to come. And of course, after Dec. 7, we'll have the actual matchups -- no more projections.

Thanks for your time, and Merry Thanksgiving.

Champs Sports Bowl
Did that used to be the Florida Citrus Bowl?

I know we got smoked by Peyton Manning there in 1997:
Tennessee 48, Northwestern 28

In fact, no.

What is now the Champs Sports Bowl was established in 1990 as the "Sunshine Classic." Its later incarnations included the "Blockbuster Bowl" (1990-93), the "Carquest Bowl" (1994-97), the "Micron PC Bowl" (1998-99), the "MicronPC.com Bowl" (2000), the "Visit Florida Tangerine Bowl" (2001) and the "Mazda Tangerine Bowl" (2001-03).

Northwestern never participated in this bowl, nor did Peyton Manning. Its inaugural champion, in 1990, was Florida State. Last year, it was won by Boston College, which joined Miami, Georgia Tech and North Carolina State as two-time winners of this bowl.

Scoring Rules

BASIC SCORING RULES

-Games held between Dec. 23 and Dec. 28: 2 points each (7 bowls)

-Games held between Dec. 29 and Dec. 30: 3 points each (5 bowls)

-Games held on Dec. 31: 4 points each (5 bowls)

-Games held between Jan. 1 and Jan. 2: 5 points each (8 bowls)

-Game held on Jan. 3: 2 points (1 bowl)

-Game held on Jan. 5: 5 points (1 bowl)

-Game held on Jan. 6: 2 points (1 bowl)

-Game held on Jan. 8: 7 points (1 bowl)

LOCKS AND SUPER LOCKS

Each player shall designate one of his 34 picks as a “Lock” and another as a “Super Lock.” Should a player correctly pick either or both of those games, against the point spread, he would be awarded bonus points as follows:

-“Lock” game: 5 bonus points

-“Super Lock” game: 10 bonus points

These bonuses pertain no matter how many points you receive for the game under the basic scoring rules. For example, if your “Lock” game is the Pioneer Las Vegas Bowl, a 1-point game, and you pick it correctly, you will receive 6 points – 1 under the basic scoring rules and an additional 5 because you designated it as your “Lock.” If your “Lock” game is the FedEx Orange Bowl, a 5-point game, and you pick it correctly, you will receive 10 points – 5 under the basic scoring rules and an addition 5 because you designated it as your “Lock.”

ADDITIONAL BONUS POINTS

In addition to the basic scoring rules and the Lock/Super Lock points, a player may earn bonus points for picking many different combinations of games. These combo bonuses, which range from three points to twelve points depending on the number of games included in the combo, are detailed under the BONUSES tab above.
